Advisor of Animal Health and Husbandry
Dr. Christian Schlegel is the Advisor on Animal Health and Husbandry for the Black Opal Group. He is passionate about race horses, making equine welfare a priority. He is directly involved in the integrity, quality and safety of the 200 Thoroughbreds he takes care of.
Race horses are considered professional athletes and therefore have unique health challenges. As the “sports medicine doctor”, Dr. Schlegel provides services based on the individual needs of each horse, from preventative health care to lameness evaluation, treatments for existing conditions, as well as advanced treatments, including surgery.
Dr. Schlegel is also an active traveler, having to visit his “patients” on location, throughout Brazil, or accompanying them during international travels.He works together with the trainer and the owners of the thoroughbreds as a team, to make the best health care decisions.
Dr. Schlegel graduated from UNESP, Faculdade de Medicina de Botucatu. He then did his residency program at the Jockey Club de Sao Paulo in 1998. Furthermore, in 2000, he did his specialization in Horseshoeing at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. After returning to Brazil, he opened his Clinique at the Jockey Club in Sao Paulo,Brazil.
